Candidate for the Legislative Assembly – Seat of Balmain

Patrick grew up in Sydney, and studied Science and Arts at the University of Sydney where he was awarded the University Medal in Mathematical Statistics. He has worked with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the NSW Department of Health, in medical research, and now in the financial sector.

Patrick’s love of cycling was rekindled while living in London and he continues to commute around Sydney by bike, as well as riding further afield with the recreational long-distance cycling club Audax Australia. He hopes to improve the accessibility and safety of cycling as a transport option, so that everyone can benefit from the advantages of reduced congestion and improved population health.

Patrick lives with his wife Claire in Ultimo, enjoying the benefits of living in the vibrant and diverse community of the inner-West.

Ken Thompson

Ken Thompson

Lives: North Shore

Occupation: Strategy Consultant

Candidate for the Legislative Council

Ken is a consultant whose portfolio covers strategic planning, risk management, cultural change, political engagement, and other matters such as the implications of climate change for business.

Previously he was Deputy Commissioner for NSW Fire Brigades (now NSW Fire & Rescue). This position comprised a portfolio covering community safety (incorporating community risk management, built environment, and fire investigation and research), ComSafe (commercial business unit), logistics (properties, fleet, and procurement), IT, training and development, and risk management and business continuity.

Ken wants all cyclists, and particularly those in NSW, to be given more opportunities to cycle safely. He also knows that there are many people who would start to cycle if there was better infrastructure in place.

Ingrid Ralph

Ingrid Ralph

Lives: Northern Suburbs

Occupation: IT

Candidate for the Legislative Council

Ingrid is currently working for Lend Lease on contract. She has a degree in IT.

Ingrid grew up in Beecroft where she currently lives, having lived in a variety of places in between. She has four children, three who live in Sydney and one near Wollongong.

Ingrid rides with Lane Covelo and friends on the weekends and during the week she commutes to the city.

Ingrid is passionate about cycling and all its benefits, namely: less congestion, less stress, better health, less costs to tax payers, no carbon emissions, more community, its sociability, reduced pressure on our health system so less costs. She is keen to encourage children to cycle.

George Paxinos

Professor George Paxinos AO

Lives: Eastern Suburbs

Occupation: Professor in Neuroscience

Candidate for the Legislative Council

George Paxinos is currently NHMRC Australia Fellow and conjoint Professor of Psychology and Medical Sciences of The University of New South Wales

George was born in Ithaca, Greece, and studied psychology at Berkley, McGill and Yale. He is the author of 46 books on the brain including the most cited Australian scientific publication.

George is interested in the environment and in transport and was the founder of the Light Rail Association.

He considers cycling and walking the least polluting and healthiest means to commute.

David Denton

David Denton

Lives: Northern Suburbs
Occupation: Chartered Accountant
Candidate for the Legislative Council

David trained as a Chartered Accountant and has worked in the finance industry. For the past ten years he’s worked in the health and lifestyle industry as the Australasian Finance Director of Weight Watchers International, and with the startup company SP Health.

David has commuted by bike for many years, first as a student and then for work. Cycling and bike building are passions he now shares with his family and friends. He understands the importance of regular exercise and how cycling can be an avenue by which the community can maintain a healthy lifestyle.

David is currently involved in “greenfield” development in the northwest growth region of Sydney where he has assisted in the successful negotiation of contracts with the State Rail Authority.

Barbara Hickson (2)

Barbara Hickson

Lives: Mudgee

Occupation: Architect

Candidate for the Legislative Council

Barbara works as an architect and heritage adviser in Mudgee. She travels extensively to other country centres around the state of NSW as a heritage consultant.

She was inspired to take up cycling by her husband almost 20 years ago when they took an overseas cycling holiday which was such a great experience she has been cycling recreationally ever since.

Barbara is a great believer in cycling for health and happiness and she wants to encourage others to cycle. She is especially keen to help cyclists throughout NSW experience safer cycling through better road infrastructure, bike paths and lanes, but most of all through good co-operation and understanding with other road and trail users.
